New Project to Start – Reader’s Wrap

30 09 2008

This past Saturday I treated myself to a visit to a nearby yarn shop, Needler’s Nest in Surprise AZ.  Of course I was entralled with all the latest yarns - bamboo blends, soy blends, corn blends, sock yarns and all the wonderful new wools for the season.  As I was scouting out all the new yarns, I came across a pattern I couldn’t resist purchasing – yes I know, I did not have much resistance and like all you knitters, what’s one more pattern.

Anyway, the pattern I purchased is called a “Reader’s Wrap”, designed by Lisa Carnahan, aka Lisa’s Knits (www.lisaknits.com) . This pattern calls for 900 yards of Aran weight yarn using size 9 US needles.

I came across a wonderful varigated yarn that I had to have for this pattern by Universal Yarn, Inc called “Classic Worsted” (www.universalyarn.com) .  This is a blend of 80% acrylic and 20% wool, 197 yards/100 gram skein and the best thing about this yarn, it’s machine washable and dryable.  The color is Black Heather (color swatch to the left) and it’s perfect for my fall wardrobe.  The lady that was looking at yarn next too me highly recommended this yarn, so I look forward to seeing how it knits up and handles machine washing/drying.

This wrap will be great for chilly days outside, curled up on the couch knitting or reading and of course great for the office.  I can’t wait to get started!

Lydia’s Sweater is Completed

30 09 2008

I just sewed on the buttons to totally complete my gift to my friend Claudine for her soon to be daughter, Lydia.  This was a very fast and fun project that knits up quickly.  I would highly recommend for a beginner knitter.

I was so happy that I had enough yarn left over to knit the matching hat.  This sweet little set will be in the mail soon to make it just in time for her baby shower.  I’m so excited for her and her husband and know that they both are anxious.  Not too much longer you two!  The pattern called for 10 skeins of Lion Brand Landscapes for size 24 months and I ended up using a total of 8 skeins, including what I used for the hat.  I used size 10 US needles for a gauge of 12 sts= 4″.  My finished project matched all measurements provided, so I would recommend purchasing the amount indicated for the pattern knowing that you might end up with an extra skein or two.

I’ve never used this particular yarn before but feel that it knitted up quite nicely.  Even though this is a 50% wool/50% acrylic mix, it would felt great too.

My yarn has arrived!

20 09 2008

I’m so excited!!!!  The yarn my the sweater project arrived this week and I can hardly wait to start.  I found out from my friend via email,  that they most likely will be going to China sometime in November to bring home Lydia.  So I have a month to get this completed and shipped off.  My goal is start knitting today, Saturday and have the sweater completed by next Saturday - of course fingers are crossed.   This sweater will be fairly quick and very easy to knit, and I plan to post my step by step progress as I go.

I  ordered 9 skeins of Lion Brand Landscapes Yarn in color shade 271 Rose Garden for this pattern and will be using size 10 US needles for this project.  Again, I choose the pattern called “Quick n’ Cozy Baby Sweater and Hat” and you can find this pattern on the Lion Brand site by clicking http://cache.lionbrand.com/printablePatterns/50733A.pdf.  I can’t wait to see the end result and know this will be toasty warm.  I just hope to have enough yarn left over to knit the matching hat.

Knitting socks

20 09 2008

It’s been a bit since I’ve last posted anything, but I’ve literally been exhausted from work and haven’t felt much like getting on the computer.  At times I wish that the modern world was not so technologically advanced.  That computers were just a dream and not a reality, but then of course if that were the case I wouldn’t be writing this post in my blog.  I just have to vent a bit – where I work it’s a full 8 hour day of being glued to a computer screen with no rest for my eyes.  By the time I get home, knitting seems quite obsolete.  But as soon as I pick up the needles and start the rhythm of knit one purl one, I relax, my nerves are quite soothed and all is right with the world.

While waiting on the arrival of the yarn I ordered to knit a sweater for Lydia, I decided to knit something quick in cotton.  So, I picked a very sweet project this week, a pair of socks knitted in Patons Grace 100% mercerized cotton in a very hot pink.   The color reminds me of the Bougainvilleas I have planted in my front courtyard to my house and they will go great with the sweater I have just started.   The pattern I used was created by Patti Pierce Stone (www.p2designs.com) and I found it to be fast, simple and a very easy to read.  I love her website too.  She has quite a few patterns to purchase and has wonderful patterns for charity knitting.  Pattern:  http://www.p2designs.com/pdfs/SoxSlipper.pdf

The very first pair of socks I knitted I gave away to my Mom, when has just about worn them out.  I know that many gals have started the practice of knitting socks on circular needles but I cannot for the life of me get into the rhythm of this kind of knitting and it is down right awkward to me.  I know that knitting on double pointed needles is tedious to some or quite intimidating to others, but truly once you get the hang of it, it’s quite fun and enjoyable.   The sock on the right was knitted in Schachenmayr Nomotta Denim 100% cotton yarn using a set of size 4 double pointed needles.  I used a pattern by Cherry Hill and found it to knit up quite quickly and the socks are lovely to wear, according to Mom.   Like any knitting enthusiast, I have lots of sock yarn just waiting to be used.  I think my favorite is a line by Opal that is a self striping yarn.  By the way, how do they do that!  Self striping yarn is awesome and you can create such neat socks.   For the latest in sock yarns, you have to check out Simply Socks Yarn Company – http://www.simplysockyarn.com/servlet/StoreFront.

Knitting while listening.

14 09 2008

There are many times that I love to spend my Sunday afternoon on the couch, knitting up a storm while my hubby watches a football game.  I am not a sports fan at all, especially when it comes to football.   My husband feels bad that I don’t have an interest and tries to find something to watch with me so I’ll stay in the living room with him.  I came up with a solution – instead of leaving to find solace in my knitting,  I have learned to put the headphones on and listen to a book on my Palm.  We both feel much better about this arrangement and we are still sharing our afternoon together.  Needless to say, I  love to make many visits to “Audible” (www.audible.com), choose a great book, purchase, download and transfer to my Palm.  Isn’t technology wonderul!   While surfing the web today,   I discovered ”Knitting Out Loud” at http://www.knittingoutloud.com) that carries nothing but audio books on knitting.   I can’t wait to purchase a few of the books I found today as I have a feeling it’s going to be a very long football season!

Happy knitting to all!

I long for wool…..

12 09 2008

Well my room is organized and all my lovely yarn stashed away in baskets.  I stood back to take a look at my “stash” and was a little saddened that I had given up all my wonderful wool when we left Kentucky to move back here to Arizona.  The textures, the colors and all the projects I had planned seems like a distant memory.  As any knitter, I still don’t think I have enough yarn and long to fill every inch of my room with what I can cram into it.   I find myself looking through the latest knitting magazines oohing and awing over all the latest  patterns and textures of yarn for fall.   I’m drawn to all the beautiful new wools and wool blends, but  I live in the desert where knitting in wool isn’t feasible.

One thing I truly miss about leaving Kentucky was the changing of the seasons, the colors of the trees in October in brilliant yellows, gold and reds that was a true inspiration to dig out the needles, wool yarn and start making heavy sweaters in a cabled patter.  I will miss not being able to wear lovely sweaters knitted in wool.  I have convinced myself that I can change out the yarn requirements to cotton or some other blend, but it’s just not the same.  What is a knitter to do?

Oh well…. just another trip to the yarn shop to decide.

Sunday at home….

7 09 2008

While my hubby is busy flipping stations between football and golf, I decided to join the world of bloggers and create my very first and only weblog or blog page.   I find this world of blogging a very intriguing past time of not only the American population but all those abroad.  It’s strangely unique and I find that bloggers post the most interesting information.  So, hopefully mine will be just as intriguing and interesting as everyone else.

I am a knitter, a very passionate knitter, who is highly addicted to yarn.  I can’t go into a yarn shop with without walking out with a bag full of yarn for my soon to be next project.  As all knitters know, there are lots of “soonto be” next projects in the works.  I get so carried away with my yarn stashing that once or twice a year I need to detash by selling on Ebay, every knitters yarn delight.  I’m not a expert knitter but I feel that I am very good at what I do.  I have sold many of my handknits to friends, family and folks I don’t even know.  I’m truly excited about trying a new idea of selling items again on Etsy – a wonderful place for all us handcrafters to sell our wares (http://www.etsy.com/).

My idea is to create hats in many colors and sizes, similar to the one to the right, that I knitted several months ago.  This hat was a fun and fast project and I had enough yarn left over to create a great scarf to match the pattern.  This particular hat was created using two balls of Cleckheaton Gusto 10 with size 10.5 double pointed needles.  I love knitting hats and scarves, as they are fun and very fast projects.

Last year I had the pleasure of joining “Charmed Knits for Charity Knit-Along” at my local yarn shop Sophies (then Louisville KY).  The project consisted of knitting as many hats possible to send to a wonderful organization called Warm Woolies (warmwoolies.org).  I was able to knit 10 hats and received 2 hats from colleagues.  It truly was a wonderful feeling to be able to help in donating hats to such a worthy cause.   The theme was geared towards the latest Harry Potter movie that was coming out and the pattern was used from Alison Hansel’s book, “Charmed Knits” , House Hats – using all the colors of the houses in Harry Potter.  I think I might do a bunch of these hats and just send them - Harry Potter is always popular!
