Knitting and Socks

25 02 2009

There’s something extremely satisfying about knitting.  I’ve never really decided if it’s the mindlessness that comes from knitting, the feel and texture of the yarn in your hands, the warmth of the wood needles or simply the pleasure in creating something from your heart.  I found on Wikipedia the definition of knitting as follows:

”Knitting consists of loops called stitches pulled through each other. The active stitches are held on a needle until another loop can be passed through them. ”

My definition of knitting is much more.  I find knitting not to be loops or stitches, but a piece of me , gliding in a seamless movement from one needle to the other.  It’s  meditation, the flowing of ideas, thoughts, feelings and love coming together to create a meaningful peace of art to wear or to give to someone who will cherish what you’ve done always.    Knitting provides solace in this ever changing environment and provides a constant that I can always turn to.  Knitting is simply a “hug” .

On that note, I have managed to finish one sock out of Patons”Stretch Socks” and I’m almost finished with the matching one to the pair.  I love the way the yarn knits and the stretchy feel of the sock on my foot.  This pair will be great to wear with shorts this summer!  I’m excited about patterns that I have coming in the mail and now I’ve got to prioritize my projects.

Happy knitting…..

Digging in the dirt.

22 02 2009

Digging in the dirt is a good thing ~ it’s very therapeutic and gives you a since of accomplishment when you see the end result.  Hubby and I went to Home Depot today with the intent of “just looking” but came home with a White Jasmine, two African Daisies, a black metal trellis and a ceramic pot.  The end result was a beautiful addition to our back yard.

We are planning on a porch swing with a nice cover so we can sit outside in the evening with a glass of wine and enjoy the beautiful Arizona nights.  I personally think it’s going to be a great sanctuary where I can enjoy the outdoors and simply, and peacefully, knit!

Happy knitting!

Spring has sprung!

21 02 2009

cable-comfort-throw

Image of Cable Comfort ThrowI think spring has sprung in my house.  I’ve been extremely motivated to spring clean and make a trip to the local Goodwill will “stuff” that has been accumulated over the past few months.  Today is another beautiful day in Arizona and I have the house opened up ~ yes, it’s warm enough at 72 degrees ~ and the sunshine is streaming in.  Ahh…. blue skies, sunshine and flowers blooming, what more could a girl possibly want!  Yarn of course….. I’m such a typical knitter.

I stopped in at Michael’s to pick up a couple of items and walked out with a bag full of Lion Brand’s  Wool-Ease Thick and Quick in the colors of Fisherman and Hazelnut.  My hubby has been after me to knit another lap blanket so I’ll stop sealing the one I made for him a couple of years ago.  The pattern for this is called “Cable Comfort Throw”  using 9 skeins of the Thick & Quick on US size 13 needles.  This is a very easy pattern  and  truly a perfect way for beginners to learn to cable.  Lion Brand is wonderful website to add to your favorites for a great collection of patterns that are “free” to download or to save.

I made my normal Saturday morning stop at Barnes and Nobles and purchased the spring issue of Interweave knits, which included a pattern from Kristeen Griffin-Grimes book “French Girl Knits”.   An I loved what Vicki Square’s ne motto is ” Start as many new projects as you can!”  She has a good article on page 18 of this issue.  I also purchased an intriguing book called “The Traveler” by John Twelve Hawks ~ it looks really good and I can’t wait to sit down to read it with my new throw on my lap.

Happy knitting!

A Trip to Needler’s Nest

16 02 2009

I almost forgot about my day at Needler’s Nest on Saturday and about the wonderful pattern I found buried in a dark corner.  I discovered a pattern by local knit designer Yumiko Alexander called Mountain Shades.  I love the simplicity of this design and it would be a perfect sweater to wear for a fall day or a drive to the Arizona high country.  I am trying to decide between the color used for this pattern, which is  Universal Yarns Classic Shades in #702 but I’m more drawn to #703.   I also discovered on the bottom shelf where all the sock yarn is kept, a 100% Superwash Wool (50 grams/220 yards)by Jojoland called Melody in color MS11 (a variegated yarn in light greens and purples) ~ this will make a great pair of socks.  This yarn is a fingering weight great for socks or lace using needle size US 1 – 3.

I am really excited about my purchases and my find ~ can’t wait to get started, which will be right after the pair of socks I’m knitting.  Doesn’t that just sound like a typical knitter!  Hmmm…. I might end up with two projects going at once because this pattern is really calling me.

Happy knitting everyone!

It’s Been Frogged……

12 02 2009

The sock project with the cable cuff started out good but did not end up good.  The sock is “huge” and needless to say I will be ripping it out and trying a different pattern.

From the words of Theresa Vinson Stenersen of Knitty.com (Winter 2003) ~

“In Japan, the kajika goes kerokero. In Spain the rana sings cruá-cruá. A beka would say bre-ke-ke in Hungary. Here in Norway, frosker sier kvakk.

In the knitting world, however, frogs say “rip it, rip it.” And that’s the reason knitters use the term “frogging” as they merrily unravel their hours worth of knitting.  Okay, it’s not always a particularly fun thingto do, especially if you’ve found a glaring error and have to rip back something complicated like air-isle or lace. But it can be incredibly liberating to admit that, well, this here just ain’t working, while possessing the sure knowledge that you have the skill and talent to make something beautiful out of a monstrosity. And if you really can’t bear to take your knitting apart alone, find a friend [next door or on-line] and turn your trip to the frog pond into a party!

The term frogging gives the impression of a rather exuberant ripping out of knitted stitches. But undoing your knitting stitch by stitch – technically known as tink-ing[that's "knit" spelled backwards] – can also be a useful trick to master. It’s quite easy to be knitting along and realize you’ve gotten your ribbing off one stitch during the particularly exciting bit of that movie you’re watching on television.”

So, on that note, I will be using the yarn for a different project and pull out the sock yarn I recently purchased in Prescott at a Good Yarn and start a new pair socks.

Mental note: create swatch to check gauge before knitting sock.

My To Do’s

10 02 2009

In between knitting projects and favorite TV shows, I want to read a few books over the next few months.  I have recently purchased a few new ones to my already large book collection and think I’m just addicted to books as I am to knitting.  Hopefully I can at least finish the Friday Night Knitting Club that I am sad to say I started over a month ago ~ yikes I do need to make priorities!  Of course I have also decided that I will start downloading more audio books from Audible so I can listen while I knit.  I find that time flies when I listen to books on tape and I get more of my knitting project completed.

A few books I’m considering over the next few months ~

My husband and I have an unused sitting room/den in our home that I decided to turn into my knitting area.  It’s perfect with lots of light.  I was able to con hubby into a comfy chair that I can curl up in and read, and of course knit in.   I thought I would take inventory to see exactly what I have accumulated and stashed away and have come to the conclusion that I need more yarn (haha).  I truly love yarn ~ the wondrous colors, the unique fibers and the textures.

Happy knitting everyone!

Cable Cuff Sock

9 02 2009

Last night while flipping through Nicki Epstein’s “Knitting on the Edge”, I came across a contrast cable pattern that I thought would be great for the cuff of my new pair of socks.  I was right, it ‘s great.  The cable band is knitted with Debbie Bliss’s Merino DK with the contrasting color the main color of the sock in Grignasco Top Print 100% Alpaca.  The cable band is 9″ long and has been neatly joined in the back.  I casted on 60 stitches and divided evenly onto three size 2 US double pointed needles to start the sock.  This yarn knits beautifully and is so soft ~ I can’t wait to wear this pair of socks.

This has been a wonderful experiment so far on how versatile your socks can be and the ideas that flow through your head as you knit something different, something new.  By doing the cable topped cuff of the sock, I now have an idea to incorporate a elaborate cable band on my next pair.

Happy knitting!

Finished Pair.

8 02 2009

I have finished my pair of ankle socks and I am pleased with the way they turned out.  The only thing I am bummed about is I wasn’t able to find the exact run of yarn for my second sock to have a somewhat matching pair in stripes.  Oh well, practice makes perfect.  I do love the way they fit and the way the feel.  My goal is to knit as many socks as possible in a variety of colors and patterns ~ by doing so, I can dispose on the store bought socks I’ve accumulated over the years.  I would love to be able to learn to knit socks like Glenna C (Knitting to Stay Sane) and no that her knitting expertise comes from years of knitting and trying out new patterns.  I am ready to embark on my purchase of Cherry Hill Yarn and try a patterned sock.    Wish me luck!

Happy knitting to all….

Sunshine and Saturday Mornings.

7 02 2009

After giving our baby her bath, we went outside to take photos of our new plants in the back yard.  I was thrilled to even be able to take a couple of photos of the male hummingbird that stays in our yard.  He was so funny and actually buzzed me a couple of times when I was trying to take his picture.  They’re not extremely close ups, but I was tickled to get what I got.  So, today I’m sharing a little Arizona sunshine, a hummingbird and our sweet baby girl, a.ka. Sparkles, and our latest addition to the back yard.  Even though we are suppose to get rain later today, the sky is beautiful and filled with lots of sunshine.  A perfect day to simply sit in the sun, soak up the warm and knit.

Happy knitting!

Lang Yarns and Socks.

4 02 2009

I just finished one sock of the pair I’m knitting in Lang Yarns – JaWoll Cotton Aktion in the sock of the month color, April.  This yarn knits beautifully and I love the striping ~ I got to use my new double pointed Harmony Wood needles, which are smooth as silk to knit with.  My husband said that the colors remind him of Easter candy, which it pretty true.  I’ve never knitted with this particular sock yarn before and really do like it.  I checked out www.yarnmarket.com and they carry the current yarn of the month colors by Lang and will have to buy a couple more skeins to check out.

In finishing the toe I chose to use the gather method instead of the Kitchner stitch or the three needle bind off – this way to finish the toe is much faster and I like the result.  My hubby informed me though it looked goofy and on the pair of socks I knit for him, he wants the toe finished in the “normal” way (meaning the Kitchner stitch).  I cracked up laughing!

Happy knitting !
