I recently received a copy of Kristin Omdahl’s new book, Knitting Outside the Swatch for review, which was very exciting to finally see what all the buzz has been regarding this book.
Kristin Omdahl presents a library of 40 original and innovative knit stitch motifs and shows how joining one or more motifs can create trims or whole fabrics.
Inside you will find a library of 40 “knitted” motifs, all created by the designer, that include flowers, stars, circles, rectangles, join as you go and a few unusual shapes. This book to me is more of a guide with a bonus of ten brand new patterns designed by Kristen, which teaches the reader how to incorporate and integrate these beautiful one of a kind motifs into edgings, bands, cuffs and more.
Patterns included are shawls, cowls, scarves and sweaters, all of which can be found online at Ravelry, but here is a small sampling of what you can expect.
So what’s to love and enjoy about this book? I have to say the unique concept that the designer has used to create beautiful geometric and dimensional fabrics, as well as the variety of techniques used for joining and creating the motifs themselves. I also have to say I love all the tips that are included with each motif design, the step-by-step instructions, the charts and the garment diagrams. You will also enjoy a lengthy glossary that includes additional tips, how-to’s, techniques, blocking and more.
This book will really make you think “outside the box” and taking your knitting, and maybe even your crocheting, to a whole new level. Just think about all the beautiful items you can make by just adding a few unique and decorative motifs. I would have to say that the sky’s the limit for expanding your creative mode of thinking, and this would be the perfect book to get you started.
