Lavender Cable & Eyelet Hat ~ Original design by Tina Sanders

download now

Inspired by the colorway of the yarn and the  lavender plants in my back yard, I created this hat using a variations of cables paired with eyelets.  While the original pattern has a fairly short brim, I think it would look great to add an additional 10 rows of ribbing for wider brim or if you don’t like wide brims, you can shorten the ribbing by 10 rows.

Requires approximately200 yards of DK weight yarn, a set of  US 5 ( 3.75 mm) DPNs and a 16″ circular needle.

Wednesday’s Pattern – Froot Loops

2 02 2011

Today’s featured pattern is the Froot Loops Gloves designed by Natasha Sills of GrittyKnits.   Inspired by the Froot Loop Sock pattern by Kristi Geraci from the Spring 2008 issue of Knitty, Natasha has created a fabulous pair of gloves by using the same stitch pattern as the socks.    With a slight twist of a stitch, perfect little rings appear mimicking the look of tiny chains that give these gloves texture with a touch of elegance.   This pattern would be the perfect complement to the Froot Loops Socks and would make a great gift for either yourself or for someone extra special.

This design requires approximately 400 yards of fingering weight yarn and either set of size US 1 DPNS for a small to medium pair of gloves or a set of  size US 2 DPNS for medium to large pair of gloves.   This pattern is offered as a free download with very well written step-by-step instructions and includes a chart for the stitch design.

Wednesday’s Pattern ~ Centrino

10 11 2010

Centrino is a giant doily, based on a few vintage patterns I found and adore!  I’m not a doily person, neither lacey nor frilly, but the lure to begin something that starts out quite wee and grows into an abundant orb could not be refused.  ~ Laura Nelkin

Today’s featured pattern is the gorgeous Centrino shawl  by knitwear designer Laura Nelkin.

Inspired by the vintage lace doilies of the past,  Laura created this shawl by combining the design elements from various patterns into a unique one of a kind design.   This pattern gives flexibility to the knitter by the use of yarn weight.  For a more light weight shawl, simply choose a  fingering weight yarn and for more of a blanket,  choose to use a sport weight yarn.   Whatever you choose, this pattern will be addictive and you won’t want to put it down!

This design is completely worked in the round from the center out  and will measure approximately  55” wide with an approximate circumference of 173”.  This project requires 1200 yards of light fingering weight yarn,  a set of size US 6 DPNs and a size US 6 circular needle.

Yarn Suggestions:  Schaefer Yarn  Margaret Stove Artisan Yarn, Berroco Ultra Fine Alpaca, Langs Jawoll, Anny Blatt Baby Blatt or Bouton d’ Or

Centrino contains both written and charted instructions, was originally released as the September 2009 Year of Lace design and has been both test knitted, as well as test worn.  This pattern can be purchased directly from Ravelry or from Laura’s website.   Laura is releasing a pattern a week for the next six weeks.   If you purchase your pattern on Ravelry, you can Buy 2 Get 1 Free on all of her new patterns by entering coupon code  TimetoKnit.  This offer will expire 11/30/10

Wednesday’s Pattern – The Wolcott

1 09 2010

Today’s pattern is the Wolcott by Sarah Burghardt.    Utilizing a mock-eyelet cable stitch, a  rice stitch and short rows, this fun, innovative and quite stylish design offers a brim that can be worn down for a more slouchy look or rolled up for a more traditional look.  Either way you choose to wear this hat, it is quite versatile and perfect for your fall or winter wardrobe.   The brim of this hat is knitted perpendicular to the body and by knitting stitches on the brim together with stitches for the rest of the hat, the connection between the two is seamless.  Sarah’s pattern is very well written and very easy to follow, making this hat the perfect portable project for your fall knitting.  You can find Sarah online at Raverly, on her Blog and on Twitter.

This pattern calls for 125 – 150 yards (114 – 137 m) in worsted weight yarn,  one set of  US 9 ( 5.5 mm) DPNs,  a US 9 (5.5mm) 16″ circular needle, a yarn needle and four buttons.

Suggested Yarns: Malabrigo Merino Worsted, Brown Sheep Worsted, Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Worsted, Kertzer Northern Worsted Solid or Creative Focus Worsted by Nashua Handknits

Antonia ~ a textured shrug

25 07 2010

I have just published my newest pattern, Antonia.  This pattern is highly textured with a design unique in itself as the stitch pattern is my own creation.   Worked in one piece with sleeves seamed, this shrug is perfect for any stage of knitting, but especially good for a beginner knitter.   Once seamed, the sleeves can be rolled up or left down for more warmth. This light-weight shrug is ideal for the office or for keeping your arms warm
during the cool days of fall.

Saffron Lace

I am currently working on a scarf pattern in a scrumptious lace design that I absolutely love!   I have moved on from swatch to actual creation and now ponder, how wide and how long should a traditional lace scarf be?  I have reviewed many lace scarf patterns to see what the common widths and lengths are, but would be curious to see what the rest of you think.

So, if you have a moment to answer two very simple questions for me, I would truly appreciate it if you can take my “survey”.   This survey is collecting information for me only for my new “Saffron Lace” scarf pattern to be published on Ravelry and Etsy by the end of the month or first part of August.  Your feedback is highly appreciated!

A “destash” project and my handspun

13 07 2010

As noted in an earlier post, I have been matching patterns with yarn in the efforts to majorly destash my stash before I buy any more.  Last year I purchased 4 skeins of yummy 100% Alpaca in a deep chocolate brown from Linda of Blue Moon Ranch Alpacas and have been trying to match it up with a pattern.

With my recent accomplishment of 220 yards in Corridale, I’ve decided to mix these two wonderful fibers into one project.  With the deep brown tones of my Chocolate Separates and the rich warm brown of the Alpaca, it should be a good match.

So, here’s what I have …..

And I’m thinking the Stitch Sampler Shawl by Lyndsey Stuart might be a fun project for these yarns.

With that said, it’s time to get knitting!

Quick and easy cowl!

13 06 2010

I had lots of fun knitting this sample for Cactus Yarn ~ what a quick project!  This pattern is the #10 Ribbed Cowl by Cathy Carron featured in the Vogue Knitting 2009 Holiday issue.  I used 2 skeins of Naturally Aspire Super Chunky ( 70% New Zealand Wool / 30% Alpaca) and a size US 15 circular needle in a 24″ length.  This is perfect for anyone who has just started knitting or who is looking for a super, I mean super, fast knitted project.  This took me two days of knitting, but I do believe it could be accomplished in one day of straight knitting.
